Diwali Cleaning Checklist: What to Do, Room by Room, in Two Weeks
Share
Quick answer
Start Diwali cleaning two weeks before Dhanteras and work top-down, back-to-front. Declutter first, then ceilings and fans, then walls and windows, then furniture, then floors last. Clean all brass and silver in week two. For Diwali 2026 (8 November), begin around 25 October and finish by 4 November.
Why does Diwali cleaning come before decorating?
Partly tradition: Lakshmi is said to enter a clean, lit home, so the house is cleaned before it is decorated. Partly practical: decor goes up over clean surfaces, and nobody wants to dust around forty diyas.
The mistake almost everyone makes is doing it in the wrong order — mopping the floor on day one, then taking down the curtains on day five and dirtying it again. Top-down, back-to-front, floors last.
The two-week plan
Week one — declutter and the hard stuff (25–31 October)
| Day | Task |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | Declutter every room. Four piles: keep, repair, give away, discard. |
| 3 | Ceilings, cobwebs, fans, light fittings, AC filters, exhaust fans. |
| 4 | Curtains and cushion covers to the wash; blinds wiped. |
| 5 | Windows, grilles, balcony railings, window sills. |
| 6 | Kitchen deep clean — chimney, hob, cabinet fronts, inside the fridge. |
| 7 | Bathrooms — grout, taps, exhaust, under-sink. |
Week two — surfaces, metal and finishing (1–4 November)
| Day | Task |
|---|---|
| 8 | All brass, copper and silver. The single biggest visual difference. |
| 9 | Furniture — polish wood, vacuum upholstery, wipe down the mandir. |
| 10 | Wardrobes and linen; fresh bedding on every bed. |
| 11 | Entrance — door, frame, nameplate, doormat, stairwell. |
| 12 | Floors, skirting and finally scent. Decor goes up. |
If you have less than two weeks, cut week one to two days of decluttering plus fans and windows, and keep all of week two. The metal day is the one never to skip.
How do you clean brass before Diwali?
Tarnished brass under warm diya light looks dull, not antique. Clean everything in one session the week before, not the morning of.
- Degrease first — warm water and a little dish soap, with a soft brush for detailing. Skip this and the acid will not reach the metal.
- Lemon and salt for light tarnish on tumblers, thalis and small decor. Cut a lemon, dip the face in salt, rub in circles.
- Tamarind pulp for heavy tarnish, urlis, idols and anything with hammered or etched detail — it reaches into texture without hard scrubbing.
- Rinse longer than feels necessary, then dry completely. The drying step is the one people skip, and it is why brass develops water spots and green patches within days.
Never use steel wool, scouring pads or a dishwasher on brass, and never use commercial polish on anything you eat or drink from. Full method in our guide to cleaning brass at home, and does brass rust or tarnish explains what the discolouration actually is.
Once it is bright, handle it with dry hands and it will stay presentable through Bhai Dooj without a second clean.

How do you clean silver and copper?
Silver: warm water, a drop of mild soap, and a soft cloth. For tarnish, a paste of baking soda and water applied gently, then rinsed and dried. Avoid toothpaste — it is abrasive and scratches the surface over time.
Copper: lemon and salt, or tamarind. Copper tarnishes faster than brass and develops a brown-to-green patina. Dry it immediately; copper in a humid Indian November will spot overnight if left wet.
Both: handle with dry hands afterwards, and store wrapped in cotton rather than sealed in plastic, which traps humidity.
What should you declutter before Diwali?
Decluttering is the part that makes the biggest difference and the part most often skipped, because it is slower than cleaning.
- Chipped and cracked crockery. Diwali is the natural moment to replace it.
- Single socks, dead pens, old chargers, expired medicines.
- Plastic containers without lids — every Indian kitchen has nine.
- Clothes unworn for two years. Give away before the festival, not after.
- Dried flowers and old toran from last year's decor.
- Half-burnt candles and spent diffuser bottles. Keep the bottle if the reeds are the only problem — our guide to reeds and refills covers when to replace which.
Traditionally, broken items and clutter are cleared before Lakshmi Puja rather than kept. Whether or not you read it that way, a house with a third less in it looks far better lit.
Do not forget the mandir
The pooja space needs its own pass, and it is easy to leave until too late:
- Clear old flowers, spent agarbatti stubs and burnt-out diyas.
- Degrease the idols before cleaning them — months of ghee, oil, milk and kumkum sit on them. Use tamarind rather than lemon on detailed pieces.
- On antique or inherited idols, clean the raised surfaces and leave the dark patina in the recesses. Polishing back to uniform yellow reduces both the look and the value.
- Wash the cloth, wipe the chowki, and lay the thali out fresh.
How do you finish so the house smells clean rather than of phenyl?
This is the last step and the one that decides how the house feels when the first guest walks in.
- Ventilate for an hour after the floors are done. Disinfectant smell is not the same as clean.
- Wash soft furnishings — curtains, cushion covers, bedding. Fabric holds last year's smell more than any surface.
- Put a clean base scent in the entrance and living room. A reed diffuser runs continuously with no flame and no attention, which matters across five days of cooking and agarbatti.
- Mist the linen. A pillow and linen mist on freshly made beds is the detail house guests remember.
- Keep a room mist handy for the ten minutes before people arrive.
For the festive season specifically, warm florals and soft woods sit well alongside diya smoke; sharp citrus fights it. See fragrance notes explained.

Frequently asked questions
When should I start Diwali cleaning in 2026?
Around 25 October, which gives two weeks before Dhanteras on 6 November and Diwali on 8 November. Decluttering and the heavy jobs go in week one; metal, furniture and floors in week two, finishing by 4 November so decor can go up.
In what order should I clean the house?
Top-down and back-to-front. Declutter first, then ceilings, fans and light fittings, then walls and windows, then furniture, then floors last. Cleaning floors early and taking curtains down later just dirties them again.
Why is cleaning important before Diwali?
Lakshmi is traditionally said to enter a clean, well-lit home, so the house is cleaned before it is decorated. Practically, decor and diyas go up over clean surfaces, and it is far harder to clean around them afterwards.
How do I clean brass before Diwali?
Degrease with warm soapy water first, then use lemon dipped in salt for light tarnish or soaked tamarind pulp for heavy tarnish and detailed pieces. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely. Never use steel wool, a dishwasher, or chemical polish on food-contact brass.
How do I clean silver at home before Diwali?
Warm water with a drop of mild soap and a soft cloth. For tarnish, apply a gentle paste of baking soda and water, then rinse and dry fully. Avoid toothpaste, which is abrasive and scratches silver over repeated use.
How do I clean brass idols without damaging them?
Degrease first with warm soapy water and a soft brush, then use tamarind pulp rather than lemon so you are not scrubbing hard enough to soften fine detail. On antique pieces, clean the raised surfaces and leave the dark patina in the recesses.
What should I throw away before Diwali?
Chipped crockery, lidless containers, dead pens and chargers, expired medicines, clothes unworn for two years, and last year's dried flowers and toran. Broken items are traditionally cleared before Lakshmi Puja rather than kept.
How long does Diwali cleaning take?
About two weeks at a few hours a day for a 2BHK, or three to four full days if you have help and can do it intensively. The variable is decluttering, not cleaning — that is what takes the time.
Should I clean the mandir separately?
Yes, and give it its own slot. Clear old flowers and agarbatti stubs, degrease the idols, wash the cloth, wipe the chowki and lay the thali out fresh. It is the one area where leftover residue is most visible.
How do I make the house smell clean after deep cleaning?
Ventilate for an hour after mopping, wash all soft furnishings, then add a clean base scent rather than more disinfectant. A reed diffuser in the entrance and living room runs continuously without a flame, and a linen mist on fresh bedding handles the bedrooms.
Can I clean brass and silver together?
Clean them in the same session but not in the same water or with the same cloth. Silver needs a milder approach — soap or a baking soda paste — while brass takes lemon, salt or tamarind, which is too acidic for repeated use on silver.
What if I only have a weekend before Diwali?
Prioritise in this order: declutter the main rooms, clean all brass and silver, fans and light fittings, fresh bedding and curtains, entrance, then floors. Skip wardrobes and the fridge — nobody sees those, and they can wait.
