Diwali Decoration Ideas at Home: A Room-by-Room Guide (2026)

Quick answer
Decorate for Diwali in this order: entrance, mandir, then one main room. Start cleaning two weeks ahead, put up decor two to three days before Dhanteras, and light diyas from Dhanteras through Bhai Dooj. For a 2BHK, budget ₹3,000–₹6,000 and about 30–40 diyas. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday, 8 November.
When is Diwali 2026, and when should you start decorating?
Diwali 2026 is on Sunday, 8 November. The five days run:
| Day | Date 2026 | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Dhanteras | Friday 6 November | Buying gold, silver and new utensils; first diyas lit |
| Chhoti Diwali / Naraka Chaturdashi | Saturday 7 November | Full decor up; rangoli at the entrance |
| Diwali and Lakshmi Puja | Sunday 8 November | Main puja, every diya lit, the door left open |
| Govardhan Puja | Monday 9 November | Annakut; family lunch |
| Bhai Dooj | Wednesday 11 November | Tilak ceremony and gifts between siblings |
Working backwards, a realistic timeline is: deep clean from around 25 October, order anything that ships by 28 October (courier networks slow badly in the final week), polish all brass on 1–2 November, and put decor up on 4–5 November so it is ready before Dhanteras.
Where should you start decorating?
The entrance. It is the only part of the house every single visitor sees, it is where Lakshmi is traditionally welcomed, and it is the smallest area — so it gives the biggest visible return for the least effort.
After that, the mandir, then one main room done properly. A house with three beautifully finished zones reads better than a house with eight half-done ones.
How do you decorate the entrance for Diwali?
Four elements, and no more:
- A toran above the door — marigold and mango leaf, or a fabric one you reuse each year.
- A rangoli just inside or just outside the threshold. Keep it simple if there is footfall; flower petals survive better than powder.
- Diyas along one edge, not both. Two or three at the threshold, then a line spaced about a foot apart.
- One substantial metal object — a brass urli filled with water, petals and floating diyas, on the floor beside the door or on a console.
What ruins an entrance is adding a fifth and sixth element: fairy lights and lanterns and danglers and a mat with text on it. Pick four and stop.

How do you set up the mandir for Lakshmi Puja?
Clean it completely first — old flowers, spent agarbatti stubs, dusty frames. Then:
- A fresh cloth on the chowki, traditionally red or yellow for Lakshmi Puja.
- Lakshmi and Ganesh placed together, Ganesh to Lakshmi's left.
- A brass pooja thali laid out and left laid out — diya, dhoop stand, kumkum, haldi, rice, a bell and a spoon.
- A ghee diya at the centre, lit before the main puja and kept burning.
- Light on both sides, at the same height.
Keep the surface uncluttered. A crowded mandir is harder to do aarti in and photographs badly. Our brass pooja thali set guide covers what each item is for.

How do you decorate a living room for Diwali?
Light at three heights is the whole trick:
- Floor level — diyas along the skirting or an urli on the floor.
- Table level — tea lights and pillar candles in brass candle holders on the console and coffee table. See our tea light holder guide for sizing and grouping.
- Above eye level — one string of warm-white lights along a single edge: a curtain rod, a bookshelf, a railing. One edge, not four.
Then switch off the overhead tube light. The same decor looks three times better the moment the ceiling light is off, and it costs nothing.
Add fresh flowers in one place only — marigold strings or a bowl of loose petals — and leave one surface completely empty so guests have somewhere to put a cup down.
How do you set a Diwali dining table?
A runner, a low centrepiece, and serving pieces that are not your everyday steel. Keep the centrepiece under about 30cm so people can see each other across the table.
The reliable formula: a shallow brass or ceramic bowl of water with floating diyas and petals, flanked by two taller candles. Our Diwali table setting guide walks through the full layering order, and dining table decor ideas covers the year-round version.

What about the balcony, bedrooms and bathroom?
Balcony: clear the drying rack. One string of lights along the railing, diyas or lanterns at the corners, nothing tall. If you use open-flame diyas on a railing in November, shield them — a Delhi breeze puts one out in minutes.
Bedrooms: one candle or tea light on each bedside, and fresh linen. That is enough.
Bathroom: one tea light, a clean hand towel, and a room mist on the counter. Almost nobody does this, which is exactly why guests notice it.
How do you stop the house smelling of smoke by day three?
Five nights of til oil, camphor, agarbatti and deep frying leaves a house smelling smoky rather than festive. Three things fix it:
- Ventilate while you cook, not after. Open the kitchen window before the kadhai goes on.
- Give the entrance and living room a separate clean base scent. A reed diffuser in a warm floral or soft wood works with diya smoke; sharp citrus fights it.
- Keep a room mist for the ten minutes before guests arrive. Faster and more controllable than lighting more incense.
Our guide to fragrance notes explains which scents combine, and best home fragrance for every Indian season covers the festive end of the range.
What does Diwali decoration actually cost?
| Item | Realistic 2026 cost |
|---|---|
| 30–40 clay diyas | ₹150–₹400 |
| Oil or ghee for the five days | ₹300–₹600 |
| Marigold and flowers | ₹500–₹1,500 |
| Rangoli colours | ₹100–₹300 |
| Fairy lights (1–2 strings) | ₹300–₹800 |
| Toran | ₹150–₹600 |
| Tea lights (packs) | ₹200–₹500 |
| Consumables subtotal | ₹1,700–₹4,700 |
| Reusable pieces (urli, holders, thali, diffuser) | ₹800–₹8,000+, one-time |
The consumables come back every year. The reusable pieces do not — which is why they are the better place to put money. An urli, a set of candle holders, a pooja thali and a diffuser cover Navratri, Diwali, Karwa Chauth, Griha Pravesh and every dinner party in between.
Common Diwali decorating mistakes
- Leaving the overhead light on. Undoes everything else.
- Decorating every room a little. Three zones done well beats eight done partly.
- Diyas on both sides of a corridor. Reads as a runway.
- Buying themed disposables printed with the year. Useless by next November.
- Not soaking new clay diyas. Dry terracotta drinks the oil straight out of the bowl.
- Polishing brass the morning of. Do it the week before, with dry hands, and it stays bright through Bhai Dooj.
- Leaving no empty surface. Guests need somewhere to put a plate.
Frequently asked questions
When is Diwali in 2026?
Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday, 8 November. Dhanteras is on Friday 6 November, Chhoti Diwali on Saturday 7 November, Govardhan Puja on Monday 9 November and Bhai Dooj on Wednesday 11 November.
When should I start decorating my home for Diwali?
Deep clean from about two weeks before, and put decor up two to three days before Dhanteras. For Diwali 2026 that means cleaning from around 25 October and decorating on 4–5 November, so the house is ready before the first day of the festival.
How many diyas do I need for Diwali?
For a 2BHK, 30 to 40 diyas covers the entrance, mandir, living room, dining table, balcony and bedrooms. Buy a few extra — clay cracks, and you will want spares for Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj.
What should I buy on Dhanteras?
Traditionally gold, silver or new utensils, because buying metal on Dhanteras is considered auspicious. Brass, kansa and copper vessels are the common non-precious choice — a thali, tumbler, urli or dinner set all qualify, and they get used all year rather than sitting in a locker.
Which direction should diyas face at the entrance?
Diyas are placed facing into the home at the main door, to symbolise welcoming light and prosperity inside. In Vastu terms the main door and the north-east are the two most important places to light one.
How do I decorate for Diwali in a small flat or 1BHK?
Concentrate on three zones only — the entrance, the mandir and one main surface such as the dining or console table. Use vertical light (one string along a single edge) instead of floor-standing pieces, and keep at least one surface completely clear so the space still functions.
How do I stop diyas from burning out quickly?
Soak new clay diyas in water for two hours and dry them completely before filling, so the porous terracotta does not absorb the oil. Use a thicker cotton wick, keep the oil topped up, and shield them from direct breeze.
Which oil is best for Diwali diyas?
Til (sesame) oil and mustard oil are the traditional choices and burn one to two hours per fill. Ghee is reserved for the main puja diya because it burns cleanest with the least smoke, but it is expensive across 30 or more diyas.
Can I reuse Navratri decorations for Diwali?
Yes. Brass urlis, candle holders, pooja thalis, serveware and diffusers all carry over. Navratri 2026 ended on 19 October and Diwali is on 8 November, so anything bought for one gets used again three weeks later.
What is the best time for Lakshmi Puja on Diwali?
Lakshmi Puja is performed during the Pradosh Kaal after sunset on Diwali evening, with the exact muhurat varying by city. Check a panchang for your location rather than relying on a national time, since sunset in Delhi and Chennai differ by roughly half an hour.
How do I make my house smell good during Diwali?
Ventilate the kitchen while cooking rather than afterwards, and run a separate clean base scent in the entrance and living room — a reed diffuser in a warm floral or soft wood sits well with diya smoke. Use a room mist for a quick refresh before guests arrive instead of lighting more incense.
What should I not do when decorating for Diwali?
Do not leave overhead tube lights on, do not spread thin decor across every room, do not place diyas near synthetic curtains or dupattas, and avoid themed disposables printed with the year. Polish brass the week before rather than the morning of.
